Kenya Power Partners with Amotech Africa and Megger to Deploy Smart Power Line Monitoring Technology

In a move to boost the reliability and efficiency of power distribution in Kenya, Kenya Power has partnered with Amotech Africa and global test equipment manufacturer Megger to roll out a smart overhead line monitoring system.

The partnership will see the deployment of Megger’s MGA Sensors, advanced devices that provide real time condition data for overhead power lines. The sensors will speed up fault detection, enable predictive maintenance and better load management and transmit data to a central platform via cellular networks.

Technology for Better Grid

According to Kenya Power, the technology will significantly improve grid performance by reducing response times and key industry metrics including:

  • SAIDI
  • SAIFI

“Before, technical teams had to physically inspect lines to locate faults. These sensors change that by sending immediate alerts and pinpointing problem areas,” said Johan Pryra, Senior Applications Engineer at Megger.

With smart sensors, Kenya Power will reduce unplanned outages and streamline maintenance across its network.

Training for Seamless Integration

To ensure a smooth adoption, a 5 day training program has been launched for Kenya Power’s technical teams. The training includes:

  • Theoretical instruction on sensor functionality
  • On-site installation techniques
  • Software configuration and data integration
  • Real time analytics and dashboard interpretation

The training is being facilitated by a joint team of experts from Megger and Amotech Africa.

Amotech Africa’s Role

Amotech Africa, based in Nairobi, is Megger’s official distributor in East and Central Africa. The company supplies test and measurement solutions across the region and will provide technical support for the overhead line monitoring project.

“This partnership shows our commitment to modernizing infrastructure through technology and training,” said Jackson Mwema, Head of Sales at Amotech Africa. “Our role is to ensure these tools are used to transform how faults and maintenance are managed.”

Looking Forward

The deployment of real time monitoring tools is part of Kenya Power’s broader strategy to digitize its infrastructure and improve customer service. By using IoT solutions, the utility company will boost operational efficiency, reduce downtime and drive long term grid resilience.
